Prime Synthesis joins TONIC
Press Release
Date: February 6, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Prime Synthesis, Inc. has joined a new consortium initiated by The Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer of The National Cancer Institute (NCI). This consortium consists of both public and private members involved in nanotechnology for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The “Translation of Nanotechnology in Cancer” consortium (TONIC) will operate in parallel with the NCI’s Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer program that was initiated in 2004 to provide funding to academic groups for large, interdisciplinary projects. These initiatives, together with NCI’s intramural laboratory, The Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory, underscore the NCI’s great interest and commitment in this area of research.
Prime Synthesis has developed an exciting new type of nano-material that can lower the manufacturing costs of two major classes of new drugs. The nano-dimensional structure of HybCPG provides a very high-efficiency substrate for more economical and higher yield synthesis of oligonucleotides, which are being tested in hundreds of clinical trials, many for the treatment of cancer. The rigidity, low back pressure, and well defined surface chemistry of HybCPG holds great potential for faster separations and larger scales of affinity chromatography, used to purify monoclonal antibodies. These are used in many block-buster drugs including those for cancer and a variety of autoimmune disorders.
The TONIC consortium will encourage government-academic-private partnerships aimed at promoting translational possibilities. This will enable Prime Synthesis to fully exploit and commercialize its HybCPG platform in the areas of cancer drug manufacture.
